CHAIR'S REPORT FOR THE YEAR 2018 - presented at the AGM held on 10th April 2019
I am pleased to report that 2018 was another successful year for the Woldingham Village Hall.
The level of bookings continued to be healthy and as a result our audited accounts to December 2018 show a very satisfactory surplus, after spending £24,000 on repairs and maintenance (of which £14,000 was major refurbishment work).
It was a year of changes, with the retirement of our long serving Trustees Tony Potter and Simon Aggiss, together with Booking Secretary Liz Aggiss. On behalf of the Committee and the Village, I would like to record our thanks for their many years of dedication and hard work. Replacements were found and two new Trustees from the village joined the Executive Committee - Martin Lewis (Chair) and Nicki Howe. Our new Caretaker and Booking Secretary Jennifer Lofthouse commenced 1st August. It was great to see how seamless the handover turned out to be.
After the new Trust Deed was approved in early 2018, we took the opportunity to review all our policies and procedures, including a thorough Risk Assessment plus a property survey and fire survey. We managed to save our hirers the cost and effort of obtaining an individual "temporary events licence" by changing our liquor licence to a permanent one that automatically covers the entire building for all events where hirers wish to serve alcohol. An optional post-event cleaning service was added so that for an additional charge, hirers no longer need to replace tables and chairs, and clean the hall after use.
As always with an old building, maintenance is ongoing. The Lecture Room and Arthur Herbert Room were repainted, our tenanted property at 1 Model Cottages was given a major refurbishment, and various essential repairs were carried out to the hall. We even managed to substantially improve a problem that has been plaguing both our Committee and our customers for years - slow flushing toilets! Now they re-fill quickly.
In 2018 we celebrated our 50th anniversary. In 1968 the main hall and foyer were added to the building that had previously been the village school, and the newly formed Woldingham Village Hall commenced. In October 2018, sixty guests who had past and present associations with the hall were invited to a lunch to mark the occasion, and local resident David Chapman produced a bespoke drawing of the building which now hangs in the main hall.
In December Knights Garden Centre kindly donated a Christmas tree in time for our Christmas Fair, and the whole foyer was decorated with white fairy lights.
Finally I would like to thank our hirers for their continued support; the Trustees who have all made important contributions to progressing the many projects we have advanced this year - particular thanks go to Nicki Fraser (Secretary) and Peter Farrar (Treasurer) for their dedication in that regard; our Booking Secretary whose efforts ensure the hall is a successful community asset; and I extend a special thank you to Hazel Dixon who has maintained our colourful flowerbeds over so many years.
